The theme this year is "self-control."  In Unit 1 students will learn about three athletes: Roberto Clemente, Wilma Rudolph and Jesse Owens.  These stories are biographical- written in narrative form.  As students become increasingly familiar with the close read process, they will be asked to identify literary devices, author's purpose and story theme.  Students will recall key facts and details to use in their responses both oral and written. It is important to know that close readings is a process where students read multiple times over.  This process can be done within paragraphs (of larger stories), passages, articles and poetry.  In addition to reading each night, it is vital that they are also writing and talking about what they are reading.
